You’ve got the hang of writing queries and creating indexes, but once you hit F5 you have no idea what’s going to happen.
* Why did I get that plan?
* Why didn’t you use that index?
* Why are you slow?
In this session, we’ll look a little deeper into query optimization, and why SQL Server makes the choices it does.
This will be fast-paced, demo-heavy and slide-light.

Erik Darling started using SQL Server after a dispute with Excel over a vlookup. Since then he’s been a developer at a market research company and a DBA for an eDiscovery shop. He enjoys arguing with the Optimizer and contributing to the First Responder Kit.

Accelerated Database Recovery (ADR) is a new SQL Server Engine feature (available in Azure SQL, Azure SQL Data Warehouse, and in the upcoming version of SQL Server on-premises) that greatly improves database availability, especially in the presence of long running transactions, by completely redesigning the current SQL Server recovery process from the ground up.

Vitor Pombeiro is a Azure SQL DB Support Engineer at Microsoft.
Working with SQL Server since version 7.0 and before that with SQL Anywhere.
Working in the clouds with SQL Server and Azure SQL DB, DW, MySQL and PostgreSQL.
